Opportunities

Every entry on this list is one of three things: a talk by somebody who does the work, a place to shadow them at it, or a call for volunteers. What each of those is, in general, is set out under the list.

Nothing has been put on the list yet.

A list of places to go. It is not medical or admissions advice.

Shadowing

following a clinician through part of an ordinary working day: watching, asking, and not taking part.

A placement is arranged rather than walked into. Hospitals and practices set their own conditions for letting a student in, and they fix the hours; what a shadow sees is whatever the day happens to hold.

Volunteering

unpaid work alongside the staff of a hospital, a clinic, a care home or a charity, with no clinical duties.

The organisation decides what a volunteer may and may not do, and it keeps the record of hours. The work is ordinary on purpose: a front desk, a day room, a blood drive, a fundraiser.

Conferences

a day or more of competitive events, workshops and speakers for students from many schools, most of them in lanyards.

HOSA – Future Health Professionals holds state conferences every spring and an international one every summer. Its events are sat in categories: health science, health professions, emergency preparedness, leadership and teamwork.
